Hardboiled guys lurking in dark places being betrayed by predatory women while spouting edgy one-liners.  These and a catchy title are just a few of the standard noir mystery thriller tropes employed by local playwright Jonathan Wilhelm in his wonderful world premiere production of “The Knife is Money, The Fork is Love.”

Consider making a contribution to “Save the liminis” and keep congruence-continuum, the off-off-Euclid theatre, which produces “way out scripts” that other local theaters don’t stage, in business.  As for The Knife Is Money, The Fork is Love, it’s a work in progress that has some fine fun segments in a creative noire model of theater and makes for fun viewing.

LIKE I SAY is an overly long, irrational script.  One can only wonder why it was chosen by the theatre to perform and why a group of actors and a director would want to spend their precious time in producing it.  Con-con has performed some excellent works.  This isn’t one of them.

Evocative but empty.  This describes the abandoned pair of over-sized, fire engine red clown shoes laying in the middle of the convergence-continuum performance space, as well as the world premiere production of local playwright Christopher Johnston's “Selfies at the Clown Motel” taking place around them.

Selfies at the Clown Motel is a difficult play to sit through.  It’s lack of focus, purpose, even with several outstanding performances, leaves little to recommend it.

Mark Horning

Convergence-Continuum bills itself as theater that opens into unknown territory by breaking down the fourth wall.  With its intimate seating (set in some cases inches from the action) you feel more a part of the play than a bystander.  At the end of this work you may come to realize that we are all Bozos on this bus.

Andrea Simakis


What we are left with is a middle-aged male fantasy of the hetero variety (holed up in a motel in the middle of nowhere with a girl who can put her foot behind her ear – right on, brother!), uncomfortably stretched over two acts like skin in a face lift.

Billed as an “uproarious and moving comedy,” though the cast tries hard, this play basically misses out on both concepts.  It’s not all the director’s fault.  The script doesn’t hold up its part of the bargain, either.  Too bad…the concept is very thought provoking.

For those who like the writing of Edward Albee, Theatre of the Absurd, and existentialism, this is an opportunity to experience one of his three Pulitzer Prize winning scripts.   They should be aware that the convergence continuum production of THREE TALL WOMEN is an acceptable, but not an exceptional staging of the work.

Theater at convergence-continuum can, at times, be provocative, profound, perverse and very funny.  Robert O’Hara’s “Bootycandy” is all of these things at once, though not always in balance or with consistently satisfying results.

BOOTY CANDY, as is true with most con-con plays, will please many (including me), and offend others. It is funny, revealing and generally well-staged. As publicity for the show states, “PLEASE BE ADVISED:  This play is called BOOTY CANDY, so they’ll be talking about booty, and show some booty.  That means strong language, mature themes, and full nudity.  You’ve been warned!”

While there are some glitches in this balls-to-the-wall satire of some familiar cultural stereotypes, the ribald humor is often howlingly funny.

"Bob" offers the perfect juxtaposition of epic storytelling and anemic story, of vibrant verbiage used to describe a pallid person and his meaningless journey.  And this very clever comedy has found a home at con-con.

BOB:  A PLAY IN FIVE ACTS, gets a con-con production, under the creative interpretation of director Geoffrey Hoffman, and the acting skills of the cast, that well exceeds the script’s development, purpose, and excessive length.

Mark Horning


If your humor runs the course between outrageous and farcical, this is the perfect show for you.  Close attention is needed as the puns and quips fly by in rapid fire sequences.  Open minded people only need to apply.  It is minimalist theater done to perfection as Bob takes you on a trip you will not forget.

Christine Howey

It's a complicated production that is choreographed well by Hoffman, with lots of odd props (an umbilical cord, for one) and quick costume changes. And some projected photos help anchor a few scenes. But perhaps more time should have been spent on shaping a raft of vivid supporting characters that could have made Bob's life more entertaining and sustainable, theatrically speaking.
