The Flick is a masterfully written, performed and produced play.  It is dramatic theater at its finest.  With that said, there are some who go to the theater for action or slapstick comedy or intrigue.  This script isn’t for them.  But, for those who want to be drawn in by sheer spoken words and fine acting…this is an absolute MUST SEE!

This is one of those Slice of Life dramas that make live theater so intriguing. No blood is spilled, no fights break out and the excitement level is kept pretty low key. The most dramatic moments happen between the scenes when famous movie themes are blasted (including the earth shaking THX intro). Yet we find ourselves drawn into the lives of these individuals hoping for the best in their lives.

THE NIGHT ALIVE, which is about the lives of a few lost souls, gets a strong staging.  Unfortunately, the play is about people who don’t engender a reason to be cared about.

Kerry Clawson

"The Night Alive" is a very dark show by famed Irish playwright Conor McPherson about five characters who have few redeeming qualities. ... Director Leighann Delorenzo has undoubtedly directed her actors to create consistently awkward connections between their characters. But their dynamics are so tentative that the intermissionless play, which runs an hour and 50 minutes, drags during the first half hour.

While extremely well done, the show seems to falter at the end. Many of the patrons leaving the theater seemed to have enjoyed the complexity and especially the comedy of the play but were unanimously confused concerning the ending as in “Who died?” Tommy? Aimee? Both? Part of the challenge will be in figuring out this burning question.

If you have a skewed sense of adventure and wish to travel down the path less traveled, you may find An Octoroon to your liking.  Remember that you are traveling back over 150 years to one of the first examples of theatrical social commentary with contemporary theater thrown in on both ends.  While not your typical evening of light entertainment, none the less it will give you food for thought and conversation following the show.

This play is familiar familial territory for the playwright, whose modern-day dramedy “Kin” – which played at Dobama in 2014 – similarly explored the intimate relationships of its characters in order to unlock the mystery of who they really are.  But this production of “Mystery of Love & Sex” is less successful.  The reason is that each actor seems to be performing in a fundamentally different play rather than finding what it takes to blend into this one.

The Mystery of Love and Sex is one of those special scripts that will appeal to the Dobama audience who come to see contemporary professional scripts which look at society and its strengths and foibles.  Bathsheba Doran’s play gets a strong production that should delight and enlighten and deserves strong support.  It’s a “go see!”

“The Mystery of Love and Sex” pushes the envelope of Cleveland Theater with its portrayal of strong social themes that include inter-racial relationships, inter-religious relationships, sex, gay lifestyles and gay marriage.  Those with a liberal bent will enjoy it while others may find it less fulfilling due to its mature nature.  As Lucinda would put it, “It’s so bohemian.”

Where’s Bill Nye the Science Guy when you need him? Maybe he could explain how you get four actors on stage talking about sex, with some full frontal nudity, and have absolutely no chemical reaction among any of them.

MARIE ANTOINETTE tells the tale of a king and queen who are totally unsuited for their roles and the part they seemingly played in inciting the French Revolution.  The author’s adaptation of the dialogue to include modern language and idioms opens the door to drawing a parallel between that period and today, for those interested in probing beyond the historical story.  The production is well done and makes for good theater.

At the beginning of the show everything is light, funny and rock and roll.  As the play goes on it turns very dark very fast.  While well acted and truthfully reflecting the life and times of two historical figures from an unfortunate time in human history this would not be a show for the delicately minded and especially not for children.

From the staging angle alone, Dobama’s Marie Antoinette is a blockbuster. But the playwright’s pro forma discussion of weighty issues at the end feels a little too pat and entirely out-of-synch with the rest of the script.

This is a lovely story but, as with the early works of many fledgling authors, it is thinly told and full of implausible, forced and structurally graceless moments. What should be a small, delicate watercolor portrait is rendered with expressionistic subjectivity, broad strokes and unrefined technique. Fortunately, it fell into the hands of director Leighann Delorenzo. Her delicate touch has tapped all that is heartfelt and beguiling in the script. And her eye for casting has allowed it to take form on stage.

Though there are flaws in the writing, Dobama’s THE REVISIONIST is a must see to experience the great Dorothy Silver and the very talented Andrew Gombas.  These performances deserve a standing ovation!

If you have yet to get your fill of the strangeness that this theater season seems bent on providing, then “The Revisionist” is your cup of vodka.  Dorothy Silver reminds us all that it is after all the actor that makes the show as her small nuances give light to a burdensome script.  In anybody else’s hands this play would suffer terribly.  Dorothy saves the day with her fantastic talent.

Director Leighann DeLorenzo enables Dorothy Silver to do her thing, crafting every word and gesture with the specificity, intelligence and wit that have long been the trademark of her performances. You must see The Revisionist for that reason, since any other reasons pale in comparison.

Andrea Simakis

Though she has a knack for making any role feel organic, her Maria is one for the ages. Whether delivering lines in seamlessly accented English or bantering with Zenon in Polish, Silver gives us a woman who has decided she'd rather be surrounded by ghosts of her own making than the real ghouls of her childhood.  The final tableau featuring Silver, alone again and back on that worn couch, in an image reminiscent of Edvard Munch's "The Scream," is the very definition of grief.

THE REALISTIC JONESES is one of those scripts that, with poor direction and acting could be a disaster.  Fortunately, under the adept directing of Shannon Sindelar and stellar performances by Chris Richard, Joel Hammer, Tracee Patterson and Rachel Zake, the Dobama production is an absolute must see!

At first blush this quirky comedy makes you laugh due to the unfiltered speech in which whatever comes to the character’s mind is blurted out.  It is only later that you find that the reason for these patterns may be due to the symptoms of a disease and the closeness of the couples.  It is here that soft guilt replaces the levity and a lesson is learned.  Well worth the effort to see this play.

The laughs come fast and furious as Eno's masterful way with quirky takes continually surprises. But from the scenic design to the direction, this play both tries too hard and then not hard enough — never penetrating below the surface and delivering on the deeper meaning that pulses just below all the glinting words.

“Peter and the Starcatcher” gets a farcical, creative and generally enjoyable production under the direction of Nathan Motta.  Though the first act often seemed exceedingly frenetic, the second act successfully developed the meaning of the story and made for an evening well spent.  It’s a chance for children and adults to let their imaginations run wild and, like Peter, never grow up.

Leave your maturity and disbelief at the door and you will be in for an evening of delight.  This production should be titled “Peter Pun” due to the non-stop hilarity that takes place on stage with the zaniest cast ever assembled.  Transcend your adulthood and return to a simple time when “starstuff “could really make your wildest dreams come true and with a few laughs as well.  This is sure to be a sellout.

Along with its lunatic shenanigans, slapstick comedy, sight gags and delightfully lowbrow streak – apparently, farts in the face never get old no matter how old you are – "Peter" possesses a melancholy sweetness. The feeling lingers long after the lights dim, like a memory of childhood, an echo from that faded Neverland.
